The Lover Who Came Back

Section 1: The Night Everything Changed

There are some mistakes you can apologize for. There are others you can never escape. And sometimes, the person you broke doesn't come back for an apology. They come back for revenge.

Rohan and Anika had been together for three years. They were both adults, deeply in love, or at least Anika believed they were.

They shared a small apartment in the city. Their evenings were filled with quiet conversations, arguments over meaningless things, laughter, and the kind of intimacy that made them believe nothing could separate them.

Anika trusted him completely. That was her biggest mistake.

One night, she discovered messages on Rohan's phone. Another woman. Months of secret conversations, promises, and lies.

Anika didn't scream. She simply looked at him and asked: “Was anything between us real?”

Rohan couldn't answer. That silence destroyed her more than the betrayal itself.

She left that night into the heavy rain. Rohan watched from the window as she disappeared into the darkness, believing she would eventually forgive him. He was wrong.

Section 2: The 2:17 AM Call & Mysterious Photo

Three weeks later, Anika died. The police called it an accident. Rohan couldn't accept it. He stopped sleeping and stopped eating.

And then, one night, his phone rang at 2:17 AM.

The screen showed: ANIKA.

Rohan stared at it. His hands began shaking. Anika's funeral had been twenty-one days ago. Her phone had been buried with her.

He answered. Silence. “Hello?”

Then a whisper: “Do you miss me?”

Rohan dropped the phone. The call ended.

The next morning, another message appeared:

You lied to me. You broke my heart. Now I want you to understand how it felt.

Rohan deleted the messages. A minute later, his phone vibrated with a photograph showing him sleeping—taken from inside his locked bedroom.

In the photograph, a pale hand rested on his shoulder. Rohan looked at his shoulder. Nothing was there.

Section 3: She Came Back

That night, Rohan couldn't sleep. At 2:17 AM, he heard slow footsteps coming from the hallway.

The bedroom door opened another inch, then another. A woman's voice whispered:

“You said you loved me.”

Anika stepped into the room. She looked exactly as she had before her death. Her hair was wet, her face was pale, and water dripped onto the floor. But her eyes were completely black.

Rohan backed away. “Anika...”

She smiled. “You remember my name.”

She walked closer. “I loved you. You don't know what love feels like until someone takes it away. Now you're going to learn what it feels like when someone takes it away.”

Section 4: The Haunting Game

After that night, Anika didn't disappear. She became part of his life.

She appeared in mirrors. She whispered from empty rooms. She called him while he was sitting alone. Sometimes she appeared beside him when he was with another woman—never touching them, only watching and smiling.

Rohan became terrified of sleeping.

Every time he closed his eyes, he dreamed of the night Anika died. But the dream was always different: driving, standing beside a river, watching her from a distance.

And every time he woke up, Anika was standing closer.

Section 5: The Legend of The Broken Bride

Eventually, Rohan discovered something hidden in Anika's old diary.

She had written about a woman named Meera—a woman who had died nearly seventy years earlier after her lover abandoned her. According to the diary, Meera's spirit had returned as The Broken Bride.

The legend said that she didn't haunt houses; she haunted broken promises.

Whenever someone betrayed the person who loved them most, she found them. And once she arrived, she didn't leave until the betrayal had been repaid.

Rohan read the final page. There were only six words:

She doesn't want your death. She wants your heart.

Section 6: The Final Night & The Red Veil

Rohan returned to the place where Anika had died. Rain fell around him. At exactly 2:17 AM, Anika appeared beneath a streetlight.

“Why are you doing this?” Rohan asked.

“Because you taught me something: love can be used as a weapon.”

Rohan lowered his head. “I was wrong. I'm sorry.”

Anika stopped. For the first time, the anger disappeared from her face. “You really mean it?”

“Yes.”

She smiled sadly. “I waited so long to hear that.”

Then the darkness behind her began moving. Something enormous was standing in the rain—The Broken Bride, her face hidden beneath an ancient wedding veil.

Anika had not become the monster. She had made a deal with it for revenge, and now it wanted payment.

Anika whispered: “Run!”

The streetlights exploded one after another. Rohan ran as Anika's screams echoed in the darkness.

Section 7: The Message That Remains

Police found Rohan unconscious beside the road the next morning. There was no sign of Anika, no creature, no footprints.

Except a small piece of paper inside Rohan's pocket, written in Anika's handwriting:

I forgave you. But she didn't.

Rohan looked up. Across the street stood a woman wearing a red veil. She watched him, slowly raised one finger to her lips—“Shhh...”—and disappeared.

Rohan never cheated again. He never entered another relationship.

And every year, on the night Anika died, he received the same message at exactly 2:17 AM:

I still love you. And she still remembers.
