Rohan was traveling back to his ancestral village after several exhausting years away in the bustling city. The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly, scorching the dusty earth and drying his throat.

While taking a narrow shortcut through a dense, shadow-draped forest road, he stumbled upon an old abandoned pond tucked beside the path.

The pond was shrouded by tangled wild vines and floating dead leaves, yet the water beneath the surface looked unnaturally clear—like a dark, polished sheet of glass.

Driven by unbearable thirst, Rohan unscrewed his canteen bottle, dipped it into the still water, and took a deep drink.

The moment the liquid hit his throat, a sudden, piercing coldness flooded through his entire chest—as if he had swallowed liquid ice. His breath froze into a cloud of white mist in the hot afternoon air.

Then, a faint, gurgling whisper echoed directly from the center of the pond:

His father panicked. “We need to hurry! The spirit is killing him!”

Behind them, the entire surface of the pond began shaking violently. A giant, grinning face formed beneath the water's surface, watching them leave...

They reached the sacred cremation grounds and laid the corpse upon a pyre of dry sandalwood.

Pandit Ji chanted the final rites and touched the flaming torch to the wood.

Bright orange flames engulfed the body.
