How to learn quickly

Listen To The Radio

The more you listen to a language the more you will ‘tune’ you ear to understanding it. Even if you only listen passively, with it on in the background, you will improve your comprehension of the spoken reply!

It’s easy to find French stations with good reception and nowadays you can receive just about any station in the world on the internet.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand anything. After a while you will start to recognise words, and little by little more words, and then sentences. The idea is to attune your ear to the language. Don’t try to pay attention, just have it on in the background. After one or two lessons you will begin to notice more and more words. You will be going to your dictionary because you heard that word in your last lesson. Soon you will start to have a pretty good idea of what they’re talking about. And so on and so on.

Read Out Loud

Speak out loud everyday. Practice speaking. Remember all the participles. Stun your teacher with your memory. Lips and tongue have to get used to making new sounds. If you read out loud to yourself or practice new phrases out loud while driving along you will improve confidence and fluency.

Watch TV and DVDs

At first with English subtitles. Firstly – Watch the film once so you understand what it’s all about. Secondly – Watch the film again but this time without subtitles. If there is something you don’t understand during the film, re-wind it a few times.

Or just watch it once and enjoy it – you’ll still be improving your language skills. The more films the better.
